Wheel Loader Tips For Snow Removal

Tips for Using Wheel Loaders for Snow Removal

One of the most universal types of equipment to have on deck is a wheel loader. In addition to picking up gravel and other heavy earth materials, this machinery can also pick up snow. Now, while there’s a chance this isn’t your first winter with a wheel loader, there are some important “housekeeping” tips to ensure you use your machine as efficiently as possible (with little room for error).

Attachments Matter

Unfortunately, the standard bucket attachment that comes equipped with most wheel loaders is not ideal for snow removal; it’s not large enough (width-wise) to get the job done. For the best results (and to help maximize efficiency), you want to opt for a bucket intended for snow removal.

Unlike your “everyday” bucket, a snow removal bucket is larger in width and is crafted from a lightweight material. Having this attachment in place will help make it easier for you to lift heavy mounds of snow out of the way. However, if you’re removing snow from a larger space — say, a parking lot — then you’ll want to consider opting for a snowplow (or snow pusher) to get the job done.

Always Find Proper Storage

Sure, it’s easier said than done to leave your wheel loader out in the elements after completing a large job. However, doing so can lead to heavy wear on your equipment — and leave you without a functioning machine when you need it most. If possible, it’s best to store your wheel loader in a temperature-controlled building with access to power; that way, you’ll have the equipment ready to go at the drop of a hat.

However, if you do not have access to an indoor storage solution and must leave your wheel loader outside, do your best to check on the machine every so often to ensure that snow is not building upon it. If you fail to remove the snow (or ice), it can hinder the functionality of your wheel loader.

Maintenance is Key

Let’s face it: Winter can be extremely harsh on your wheel loader. And if you’re not doing everything necessary to maintain it, chances are, your equipment will give way unexpectedly. When you know that cold, frigid temperatures are on the way to your location, make sure to top off any fluids (e.g., fuel) to ensure optimum performance the next time you need to remove snow.
